Socials are definitely a massive part of any society, especially sports societies. And whilst they are fun, they can cost a lot when you add it up over the year. Costumes for the theme can be especially pricey- but it can be done cheaply!
Over the year, I have been to countless numbers of socials, ranging from frat parties to the bog standard dress-as-something-with-the-same-letter-as-your-name social. But, it is doable if you’re budget is tight!
OK, so obviously the best idea is to ask someone you know, so for the frat party last night (which I am still currently suffering some of the effects of) I went as a cheerleader. How much did it cost me? Nothing but the remaining scraps of my dignity (the skirt was very short). It cost me nothing due to me knowing a few people who cheer for the Panthers.
There are photos, but I think it’s best you use your imagination, as I wasn’t exactly looking my most sophisticated.
Charity shops are also a shout, especially the one on London road (Sue Ryder) as everything is only £1, so you can pick up the odd bits or even a whole outfit for under a fiver (trust me its possible).
Lastly, probably my least favourite method is to make it. It’s such a pain, although if you nail it, everyone will be v. v. impressed. If you intend to make the whole outfit, then the market is cheap for fabrics etc! But if not, just do the odd bits using things like cardboard, tinfoil etc to make it look like some kind of effort has been made!
Socials are supposed to be fun, and shouldn’t make you worry about if you can afford it! So, even if your outfit isn’t the best, it’s the thought that counts.
